“There’s nothing sexy whatsoever with good old-fashioned weight training!” – Charles Staley
Strength coach and athlete Charles Staley made this point during an interview on the Super Strength Show. He believes that, to an outsider, weight training seems boring. “That’s why you can’t make a reality show out of it,” he says. “If you try to do something exciting, you’re probably going to end up in trouble!”
Many experts in the iron game would agree. Dan John, for instance, contends that “most champions are built by punch-the-clock workouts rather than extraordinary efforts.”
It’s the ability to put in the work—day in and day out—that ultimately leads to results. Not every workout will be great, but most will be steady and productive. As Staley’s training partner, Bret Contreras, puts it:
- 1 out of 5 workouts will be stellar
- 3 out of 5 workouts will be average
- 1 out of 5 workouts will suck
Take-Home Message
There’s nothing glamorous about strength training, but if you punch the clock and stay consistent, your effort will pay off in the long run.
