What Is Your Time Worth?

After weeks of plummeting prices, the cost of gas is rising again in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). It reminds me of when I started working on The Business of Personal Training about 10 years ago. Gas prices were just as volatile back then. Whenever they were about to cross the dollar-per-liter mark, radio stations would announce it, and people would rush to the pumps, creating massive lineups.

Now, think about it—gas was only going up by a few cents per liter, yet the reaction was huge. Let’s break it down:

  • Say you wait 10 to 15 extra minutes to save 5¢ per liter.
  • With a 60-liter tank, that’s a total savings of $3 per fill-up.
  • Over a month, that adds up to $12 saved for about an hour of waiting.
  • If your time is worth $50 an hour, you’ve effectively lost $40!

Even if gas prices jumped by 10¢ per liter, you’d still be losing money by the end of the month. That’s why I would intentionally go to stations that had already raised their prices—no waiting, no hassle. To me, saving a few cents didn’t make sense.

The same logic applies to everyday tasks like shoveling your driveway, mowing your lawn, or cleaning your house. Often, it’s more cost-effective to pay someone to handle these chores so you can focus on higher-value activities.

Instead of spending hours trying to save a few bucks, you could use that time to:
✅ Market your business
✅ Make phone calls
✅ Build your website
✅ Work on a book or webinar
✅ Write an article
✅ Spend quality time with family and friends

Figure out what your time is worth—and spend it wisely!
