I’ve been in the business of personal training for 20 years, and during that time I’ve seen far too many trainers come and go. On one end, there are people who want to get into the business but don’t know where to start. On the other end, there are trainers who have been in business for a while but are struggling and need help.
Most trainers are willing to spend their time and money on training education, but very little attention is given to the business side of things. Well, all the training knowledge in the world won’t help if you don’t have any clients!
There’s only so much a trainer can spend on seminars every year. Let’s say you allocate $1,000 annually for continuing education. I bet most of that money goes toward training education. Do yourself a favour — invest about $100 of that annual fund toward the business of personal training. You won’t be disappointed.
Over the years, I’ve established 20 principles for success in the business of personal training. These principles allowed me to reach a 6-figure income after only a few years in business — and to sustain high annual earnings to this day. I’ve met many personal goals along the way by following these principles.
Whenever I conduct a business consultation with a trainer, one of the first questions I’m asked is: “How do I get new clients?”
The reality is, if you want new clients, you need to focus your efforts on the clients you already have!
Think about it — the longer you keep the clients you have, the longer you’ll receive a paycheque. Everyone seeks long-term security in their job. Don’t just think about what you’re bringing in today. The smart trainer also considers what they’ll bring in tomorrow.
And if you provide quality service to your existing clientele, not only will the retention be there, but you’ll also be rewarded with referrals. Satisfied clients are more than happy to refer you to others, and if you do your job right, they’ll be walking billboards for your services. Their appearance can be a powerful marketing tool — and the beauty is, you’re not paying for that ad. In fact, they’re paying you!
Of course, there are many ways to attract clients beyond referrals. I cover various methods in The Business of Personal Training. In this power-packed talk, you’ll learn the following:
