From Zero to Two: Leo’s Chin-Up Breakthrough

When Leo began training with me in September 2024, our first goal was to improve body composition — lose fat, build a foundation. By May 2025, he was lean enough to start tackling chin-ups. The test? One honest attempt… and zero reps.

That’s where the journey began.

We kicked off with Phase 1: Eccentric Chin-Ups, focusing on controlled lowering to build strength and technique. Then came Phase 2: Isometric Holds, pausing at key points in the movement to develop tension and stability. These two phases set the stage for real pulling power.

Fast forward to late September, and Leo has officially crossed a major milestone — two clean, unassisted chin-ups on his own. The first rep is always the hardest. The second proves it’s not a fluke.

What’s Next: Phase 3 and Beyond

Now that Leo can perform full reps, we’re entering Phase 3: Concentric-Focused Training — the “pulling up” phase of the chin-up. This stage emphasizes strength through the full range of motion, gradually reducing assistance while adding volume and intensity.

The mission is simple: turn two reps into three… then four… and keep climbing.

Despite two extended trips to India and Peru temporarily pausing our progress, Leo’s consistency and discipline have kept him on track. We’re back in rhythm and ready to build momentum again.

The Blueprint for Chin-Up Success

Leo’s story highlights the key steps that turn struggle into strength:

  • Get Lean First: Excess weight makes chin-ups harder. Optimize body composition before chasing reps.
  • Train Smart: Use a structured progression — eccentric, isometric, then concentric phases.
  • Be Consistent: Setbacks happen (life, travel, work). What matters most is getting back on track.
  • Balance the Body: Pair vertical pulling with vertical pressing to support joint health and symmetry.

This system works — Leo’s journey proves it.
