The California press is a cross between a close-grip bench press and a lying triceps extension. It targets the triceps in a unique and highly effective way.
I prefer to use a reverse-band setup for this exercise. The bands offload tension at the bottom of the movement, reducing stress on the triceps tendons. As you press, they offer less assistance, creating a form of accommodating resistance—lighter at the bottom, heavier at the top.
This variation not only protects your joints but also reinforces proper mechanics and a full range of motion. If you want to build stronger triceps without beating up your elbows, try the California press with a reverse-band setup.
Give it a shot and feel the difference.
